Using natural stand development patterns in artificial mixtures: A case study with cherrybark oak and sweetgum in east-central Mississippi, USA

چکیده
Results from a long-term planted mixture of cherrybark oak (Quercus pagoda Raf.) and sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) showed sweetgum taller in height and larger in diameter than cherrybark oak early in plantation development. By age 17 years, cherrybark oak was similar in height and diameter with sweetgum and by age 21 years was taller in height and larger in diameter than sweetgum depending on the spacing arrangement. The ascendance of cherrybark oak above sweetgum in an intimate plantation mixture confirms results from a stand reconstruction study of cherrybark oak and sweetgum development in natural stands. Afforestation of abandoned agricultural fields and pastures in the LowerMississippi Alluvial Valley (LMAV) has receivedmuch attention in the past 20 years. A common afforestation prescription is to plant oaks on a 3.7 m 3.7 m spacing. Recently, concern has been expressed about planting only oaks (767 seedlings ha ) and the resulting effects of early intra-specific competition following canopy closure. Recommendations have included planting a greater number of species in intimate mixtures, but little is known about how such stands would develop. Establishment of mixed-species hardwood plantations in the LMAV should be based on known stand development patterns, whether from other plantation trials or documented patterns in natural stands. Title: RESPONSE OF CAMBIAL AND SHOOT GROWTH IN TREES TREATED WITH PACLOBUTRAZOL
Description: Three experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of paclobutrazol on shoot and cambial growth of nine tree species located in Indiana and Louisiana, U.S. In Experiment I, white oak (Quercus alba L.) and red oak (Q. rubra L.) in Indiana were treated in April 1995 with paclobutrazol using the soil drench method. In Experiment II, paclobutrazol was applied in April 1996, usi...

Midstoty competition control c nd shoot clipping have been proposed to increase the vigor and height of advance bottomland oak reproduction. Results from a study in east-central Mississippi showed that advance cherrybark oak (Quercus pagoda Raf) releasedfrom midstory competition had greater survival than nonreleased seedlings, 64% and 48%, respectively, 9 yr after treatment. Released seedlings ...
متن کاملStand Development Patterns in Southern Bottomland Hardwoods: Management Considerations and Research Needs
Stand development involves changes in stand structure over time. Knowledge of stand development patterns is crucial for effective forest management, especially of southern bottomland hardwood forests. These forests contain more than 70 tree species, many of which have commercial timber and wildlife habitat value. I n this paper, current techniques i n stand development research are reviewed. Em...
متن کاملThe Influence of landform, Terrain Shape Index and Aspect Slop on the Structural Distribution of Mixed Stands in the Arasbaran Forest by Ordination Method (Case Study: Kaleybarchay Watershed)
The forest structure and stand composition are controlled by several physiographic factors, because these factors play an important role in control the physical and chemical conditions of the environment, including access to light, soil moisture, and nutrients. In this study, the physiographic characteristics indices of the study area including landform index, terrain shape index and aspect slo...

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of throughfall (TF) and litterflow (LF) on oak (Quercus castaneifolia C.A.Mey.) and their monthly changes in the mixed stands located in district one of Shastkolate forest, Golestan province. For this purpose, TF and LF samples were collected after each rainfall (RF) in a one-year period and their content of Na+, K+ and Ca2+ compared with the ...
